Innovative traditional dishes to delight your palate
If you are a foodie, then you’re in good hands thanks to the hotel’s determination to supply the very finest gastronomy through its variety of restaurants. The dining options include Menceyes, an eatery serving a full morning buffet breakfast and an à la carte menu in the evenings, and Los Laurelesan, another à la carte restaurant which overlooks the gardens and the pool.
For a lighter bite, guests can relax in the Iballa Cocktail Bar, which is open throughout the day, serving delicious appetisers and snacks. Papa Negra is the hotel’s gourmet restaurant, which specialises in classic Canary Island dishes with an innovative twist. Coloured potatoes with mojo sauce, or cream of watercress with millet foam, fresh cheese and gofio, are just two of the delicacies to be found. I still haven’t decided which is my favourite of the two.
But the showstopper has to be the Aborigen restaurant serving haute cuisine created by renowned Chef Marcos Tavío. Based on classic Canary Island fare, it features seasonal produce, carefully prepared to take diners on a culinary journey around the island, treating their senses to a truly one-of-a-kind experience. We had the very best of theatrical dining here with dish after dish served before us with excellent precision. Good food doesn’t have to stop at the end of the meal either. Guests wishing to try their hand at rustling up good and hearty gastronomy to impress friends back at home, can head to the Cookery Classroom, where the Iberostar Grand Mencey offers the chance to learn from the hotel’s skilled culinary advisors.
Las Teresitas beach is an iconic beach in Santa Cruz, and the hotel provides a free shuttle bus to and from it and is just eight kilometres away. However, we decided to head over to the beach fronted Iberostar Grand Hotel El Mirador in Costa Adeje. The hotel looks like a huge Spanish villa and comes with a lake-like pool wrapped around the front. You can expect plenty of peace and quiet here as it’s adults only.
It’s different from the hotel we were staying at, but just as lovely. In between soaking up the sun and having a sleep-inducing massage treatment at the spa, we dined like kings and queens. The seven-course degustation menu at La Pérgola was definitely bigger than our bellies, but that didn’t stop us from devouring it. Besides, we all know that the Mediterranean menu is good for us.
Sunshine days may be a few months away in the UK, but they can still be had in Tenerife, just a mere few hours away. And where better to stay than one of these luxury Iberostar hotels.
