We explore ‘The Vintage Honeymoon’ jewellery collection which was inspired by the historic Majestic Hotel in Kuala Lumpur and the luxurious Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Express.
Glamour and sparkles come to light in a capsule collection by Singaporean jewellery designer Choo Yilin in collaboration with YTL Hotels.
Named ‘The Vintage Honeymoon’ this collection was inspired by old-world glamour and more specifically, The Majestic Hotel with its opulent heritage as well as the Eastern & Oriental (E&O) Express train which exudes luxury and refinement of a bygone era.
Steeped in rich colonial history which is reflected in the rooms in the Majestic wing such as the Drawing Room and Cigar Room, The Majestic Hotel is one of the few heritage hotels in the Malaysian capital which can claim to be authentic in its décor and interiors.
The elegance of the E&O Express, on the other hand, provides the perfect backdrop of those who wish to indulge in a bit of nostalgia albeit with modern conveniences and luxury thrown in. Decorated in Jim Thompson Thai silks with mouth-watering fare prepared by 5-star chefs, this journey from Singapore to Bangkok is one which ticks all the boxes when it comes to symbolising old-world glamour and travel.
With so much material to work with, jewellery designer Choo Yilin has designed jewellery which pays homage to the 1930s but with modern Asian touches to put her own stamp on it.
Sautoir necklaces and seed pearl halos are just some examples of vintage styles which Choo adopted in this limited-edition capsule collection. “Both the Majestic Hotel and the E&O Express seamlessly married our colonial past with our South-East Asian present and that made designing this collection so wonderful,” Choo says.
Apart from pearls which are used extensively in the collection Grade A jade also features prominently in the collection.
The reason? Choo explains further: “The Chinese have a saying; “Gold is valuable but jade is priceless”. The idea is to create and design with jade in such a way that even non-Chinese will feel that way about jade….you don’t attach a specific ethnicity to pearls and diamonds, but the history of jade is inextricably intertwined with the history of Chinese people. This brand was also about creating jade pieces in such a way that it can deeply connect with a non-Chinese audience as well.”
Vice-President of Marketing for YTL Hotels, Geraldine Dreiser commented, “YTL Hotels loves the blend of history and heritage in Choo Yilin’s latest capsule collection. The Art-Deco inspired designs speaks volumes for The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur as well as E&O Express.”
Belmond which manages the E&O Express is also part of this collaboration. “Belmond is honoured to be an inspiration for Choo Yilin’s amazing new collection and delighted that travellers on the E&O Express will get a chance to experience the compound effects of all these complementary elements in a unique and unforgettable journey,” reflects Mr. Valentin Waldman, General Manager of Eastern & Oriental Express.
