Which is the best Italian city to live in? According to the 2022 ‘Italian Quality of Life’ survey, the city that clearly beats all others is Trento. In this feature, we’ll be looking at what Trento and the surrounding area have to offer.
The northern Italian region of Trentino is situated in the heart of the Italian Alps. It is home to the city of Trento, nestled within the mountains, well-known for its medieval architecture, art and culture, relaxed pace of life and rich food scene.
The city has been crowned the best city to live in Italy according to the 24th edition of the annual Italian Quality of Life Survey, conducted by the ItaliaOggi newspaper and the La Sapienza University of Rome. Trento took the top spot in eight out of nine sectors considered. The report measures Italian cities’ quality of life by considering indicators such as public services, health and the environment, demographics, leisure time, law and order, the standard of living as well as business and employment.
The city of Trento (pop.120,000) boasts magnificent views of the snow-capped mountains and a great variety of monuments, ancient castles and culinary delights which are waiting to be discovered. It also boasts a fascinating inner city which has been restored over the last several years.
It is brimming with ancient sites, including fascinating Roman remains, a beautiful main square dotted with cafes, the famous Buonconsiglio Castle, Palazzo Pretorio, Neptune’s Fountain, and churches such as Santa Maria Maggiore and the San Vigilio Cathedral.
It is a safe and perfectly sized city, with buzzing bars and restaurants and is the perfect destination to relax and unwind all year round, with a glass of sparkling Trentodoc wine in hand to experience an authentic Italian ‘La Dolce Vita’ experience.
Right now, visitors and locals alike can enjoy the annual Trento Christmas Market, which is heavily influenced by the mountains’ traditions and set against the backdrop of the distinctly Italian Piazza Duomo. Available to visit until 8 January 2023, it’s a great place to get into the festive spirit and purchase local produce, perfect for stocking fillers or Christmas presents.
The peaceful, nature-enveloped city is extremely well connected to larger northern Italian cities like Verona, Bergamo, Milan, and Venice, with nearby airports a mere 1-2 hours away. Trento is also connected by long-distance trains that pass by some of Italy’s most wonderful wide landscapes allowing travellers to enjoy a picturesque and stress-free trip to the region of Trentino.
