A Travel Expert Reveals the Best Things to Pack When Heading to Colder Climes

Packing is one of the most dreaded parts of a holiday, and not remembering to take the essential and appropriate things with you is an even bigger dread. Visiting colder destinations during winter is an excellent way to embrace the season; however, it’s crucial to consider how packing for a winter holiday destination differs from a summer one.

Below, Joanne Lynn, a Travel Expert at Riviera Travel, shares her top tips for packing when visiting a winter destination.

Don’t Forget Extra Layers
Packing extra layers is essential for a winter holiday. The destination’s cold temperatures will require additional layers to keep you warm during explorations. I recommend wearing a base layer, which will be the more fitted clothing to keep your skin dry, a mid-layer, which will be slightly more breathable clothing to keep your body insulated, and then an outer layer, the heavy-duty garments to protect you from cold, harsh weather.

Feel Extra Toasty with Accessories
In addition to layers, take extra precautions to feel warm during your trip with thick socks, gloves, hats, and scarves. These accessories will keep your body insulated while working as a barrier to minimise the skin’s exposure to cold temperatures.

Wearing these winter accessories will keep you warm and comfortable during your holiday and protect you from health issues such as frostbite and hypothermia.

Always Bring Waterproofs
Packing durable, waterproof clothing is essential when visiting a winter destination. A waterproof coat will keep you dry, preventing discomfort and hypothermia. Opt for a thick, waterproof jacket for maximum protection.

While this can be an inconvenient and space-limiting item to pack, you’ll be grateful to have brought it with you once you reach your winter destination.

Stay with Sun Protection
While packing for a winter holiday differs from a summer trip, one thing that remains prevalent is sun protection. Even during freezing temperatures, you’re still vulnerable to the sun’s UV rays, so it’s crucial to pack necessities to stay safe and protected.

Packing sunglasses, SPF, and lip balm will protect you from UV rays and prevent skin damage. Lip balms and SPFs are essential all year round, protecting you from harmful rays and harsh winds that lead to dry, damaged skin.

Comfortable Footwear is Key
Comfortable and practical footwear is one of the most important items to pack. Foot pain and discomfort can significantly impact your holiday and prevent you from participating in excursions.

Winter shoes or boots will protect your feet from harsh winter weather and allow you to immerse in explorations fully.

Leave Room for a Smart/Casual Attire
While packing practical clothing and accessories is essential during a winter getaway, always pack smart/casual attire.

Packing a more formal outfit alongside your winter essentials ensures you have attire ready for classy affairs such as fine dining or a special celebration.

Remember the Essentials
Don’t forget to pack the general travelling essentials during a winter trip. Remember to pack passports, flight tickets and any other necessary documents to ensure a stress-free trip this winter.
