Simon Wittenberg takes a look at some of the latest limited edition releases making the headlines in the world of whisky.
Cù Bòcan Limited Edition Creation #5
Cù Bòcan, a Highland Single Malt distilled, matured and produced at the Tomatin Distillery in Inverness, has unveiled the Limited Edition Creation #5 whisky. This is the fifth addition to the brand’s “Creation” series, and is believed to be the first single malt scotch whisky to have been matured in Colombian Andean Oak casks.
Cù Bòcan Creation #5 was distilled in December 2011 and initially laid down in refill American oak hogsheads before being placed into Andean Oak casks in June 2021. A little over a year later, the whisky was bottled.
The nose of Cù Bòcan Creation #5 is incredibly herbaceous with aromas of ylang-ylang, carnation, eucalyptus, before sweeter hints of white chocolate pralines and lemon sponge cake ensue. The mix of Andean Oak’s unique properties and Cù Bòcan’s light smoke has created notes of toasted clove, smoked nutmeg, and creosote.
This leads to flavours of campfire banana splits, cinder toffee and clove spiced vanilla, before a warming finish with gentle phenols and spice.
Cù Bòcan Creation #5 is available in specialist shops worldwide with an RRP of £60 per bottle. For more information, visit www.cu-bocan.com.
Royal Salute Coronation of King Charles III Edition
To commemorate the forthcoming coronation of King Charles III on 06th May, Royal Salute has released a new limited edition expression named the Coronation of King Charles III Edition. This is effectively the second coronation in the history of the brand, as the Royal Salute Signature 21 Year Old blend was born 70 years ago as a gift for of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.
The whisky created by Master Blender Sandy Hyslop to mark this significant moment in royal history, has been crafted from 53 individual blends to reflect the year that Royal Salute was launched.
The result is a beautifully rich and complex expression, boasting notes of fresh redcurrants, dark chocolate praline, freshly roasted chestnuts, and a palate of sweet figs and fresh ginger, before culminating in a long and rich finish with a playful spice.
Only 500 Dartington crystal decanters, which are housed in an intricate wooden box reminiscent of Westminster Abbey, are available globally priced at $25,000 (around £20,000) each. For more information about the new expression, visit www.royalsalute.com.
Tomatin Limited Edition 45 Year Old
Tomatin has released its very first 45 Year Old for travel retail. Bottled at 41.5% ABV, this limited edition single malt whisky has matured in a Spanish Oloroso sherry cask for more than 45 years before being bottled earlier this year at natural strength.
Featuring a natural colour, and non-chill filtered, the result is a tropical spirit on the nose, which is followed by a wave of summer berries and cherry before a dryness emerges in the form of freshly roasted coffee beans.
This exquisite whisky is housed in a custom-made Glencairn crystal decanter with a golden stopper, and is encased in a striking high gloss wooden box. Furthermore, each pack comes with a bespoke metal certificate, signed by Master Distiller Graham Eunson, as he passes on guardianship to each of the new owners.
Only 250 individually numbered bottles are available worldwide through airports and luxury global travel retail outlets, carrying an RRP of £7,500 (€8,500).
