We’re pretty sure that most people would be more trusting of advice given by someone in the know, as opposed to the advice they had read that often doesn’t even have a name attributed to it. In a time where people can simply pay to have nice things written about them, knowing what to believe is nigh impossible, and this is what World of Mouth is seeking to address.
Everyone seems to know someone who claims to be an expert when it comes to food. Even by conservative estimates, the size of this demographically varied group is tens of millions of people. It goes without saying that they all want to avoid a lousy restaurant experience, and the best way to do this is by having up-to-date information directly from industry experts.
Some say that traditional restaurant guides have failed to keep up with the exponential growth of the foodie culture. Popular guides, such as TripAdvisor, are often unreliable; some feel it lacks authority, while more serious guides like Michelin can be impersonal and static. It has left foodies craving a highly curated, genuinely up-to-date service. World of Mouth is aiming to be the solution.
Whether abroad or in their home country, pretty much everyone would want to know the top spots in every culinary destination: the best and tastiest street food vendors or places to go for fine dining, the most authentic osterias, and the genuinely good wine bars.
To make this possible, World of Mouth has created a community comprising a range of hand-picked culinary industry experts who list places they love without the noise of ratings or advertising.
By combining this highly curated data with machine learning, the goal of World of Mouth is to create a personalised service to fit the needs of even the most demanding foodies.
“There is nothing I trust more when I travel than World of Mouth. There are plenty of places in the guide, and all of them are good in their own way. World of Mouth is made by people who care – that’s why I’ve never been disappointed with the recommendations in the guide,” says Santiago Lastra, World of Mouth expert and chef-patron of restaurant Michelin-starred KOL in London.
The World of Mouth Expert Community includes some of the biggest names in the culinary industry, such as Danish Chef René Redzepi (Noma, Copenhagen), Italian-Argentine Chef Mauro Colagreco (Mirazur, Menton), and Washington Post food critic Tom Sietsema.
Other experts include Ana Roš (Hisa Franko, Netflix’s Chef’s Table), Albert Adrià (El Bulli, currently Enigma, Barcelona), Rasmus Kofoed (Geranium, No 1 in The World’s 50 Best 2022, Copenhagen), and Phil Rosenthal (Netflix’s Somebody Feed Phil).
New experts are joining daily, making the World of Mouth community a dynamic and ever-evolving resource for foodies worldwide.
“We want to create the world’s best restaurant guide offering a 100% hit rate in all restaurant selections, with experts in every major city worldwide. A guide that is loved by users and restaurants alike,” says Kenneth Nars, co-founder of World of Mouth and long-standing World’s 50 Best Academy Chair.
To keep the service trustworthy and transparent, experts cannot recommend their own places, no restaurant can pay their way to the guide, and there is no advertising. World of Mouth currently has almost 10 000 recommendations in 2000 cities and over 75 000 users worldwide. The app content is free for users, and new premium features will be added in the future.
World of Mouth is free on App Store and Google Play; for more information on the app, and its background story, visit its official website at www.worldofmouth.app.
