It’s an art form that is often shrouded in secrecy, but the Experimental Perfume Company offers an absolutely glorious and completely honest view into the world of perfumery.
Christian Dior famously said, “A woman’s perfume tells more about her than her handwriting.” And yet somehow we still flock, in our droves, to pick out a bottle of perfume that is essentially used by millions of others.
And while some may enjoy the concept of belonging to a fragrance-tribe, if you’re looking for a truly unique fragrance, you absolutely must step through the door at The Experimental Perfume Company.
The Experimental Perfume Club offers a space to learn, explore and practise the art of perfumery. The perfect way for perfume lovers to nurture their inner alchemist and open their mind to a whole new way of understanding fragrance.
In 2015, wanting to open fragrance up to the consumer and demystify the world of perfumery, she opened the Experimental Perfume Club.
Choosing some of the most enjoyable elements of her training, she developed workshops to help people understand scent better. Exploring the smells of individual ingredients, harmonious combinations, understanding both the magic and the science of fusing scents.
The premise is quite simple; you play around with the brand’s signature scents, called ‘layers’ until you find your perfect blend – with thousands upon thousands of potential combinations. Some of the scents available for blending include crowd-pleasers like fig, neroli and jasmine, as well slightly more obscure notes like bergamot and spices.
For me, an intransigent Jimmy Choo fan for as long as I can remember, a unique blend of Amber and Jasmine was suggested. We called in ‘Sophie D’Ambre’, and it very quickly became my unique scent. Compliments flew in aplenty, and it gave me more delight than it possibly should have explaining that this scent was, in fact, unique to me.
Albeit it may not be the most complex scent – simply through not having the vast range of ingredients (and knowledge) most perfumers do – it will be your very own creation, which has never felt more special.
A tiny, beautiful window into the world of perfumery, that so few know. And I have to say, coming away from it, I’ve never had more respect for the perfumers who blend and create so masterfully. I absolutely implore you to open your mind and do the same.
If you can’t make it out to meet with The Experimental Perfume Company in person, or you want to surprise a loved one with a truly unique gift, you can still create your own special scent at home with The Experimental Perfume Company by ordering their blending kits online.
