Need a swig of Johnnie Walker’s Blue Label while staying home? Ong Chin Huat gets the low-down on the fabled Scottish Whisky’s latest limited edition Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal.
Launched at a time when most were under lockdown, Johnnie Walker, the world’s number one Scotch Whiskey brand recently introduced its limited edition Blue Label Ghost and Rare Glenury Royal.
What so special about this precious elixir you may ask. Well, for starters it is made using irreplaceable whiskies from shuttered ‘ghost’ distilleries and thus rendering it a scarce commodity.
“Shining a light on this hidden treasure of the whisky world is something we’ve wanted to do for some time. This indulgent new limited edition provides us with a wonderful opportunity to explore the remarkable layers of rich fruit found in every drop of Johnnie Walker Blue Label,” said Jim Beveridge, Johnnie Walker Master Blender.
As the third in a series of annual special releases, the Blue Label Ghost and rare Glenury Royal is derived from its eponymous which closed in 1985. Delving into its history is essential if you wish to understand why this exceptional tasting whisky has become one favourite among whisky connoisseurs.
Founded by Captain Robert Barclay in 1825, this member of the British Parliament claim to fame was that he was the first man to walk a thousand miles in a thousand hours, no mean feat.
The distillery he founded was however destroyed by a fire, but he resurrected it, and it thrived once again. Under Barclay’s leadership, it flourished to become one of only three Scottish distilleries to enjoy a royal title.
Apart from Glenury Royal, two other rare whiskies from the closed down distilleries of Cambus and Pittyvaich were added, balancing their creamy toffee and butterscotch notes with the sumptuous orchard fruits, sweet apple and delicate apricot character of Glenury Royal.
Beveridge added: “We have waited patiently for that moment when we turn our thoughts to this exceptionally rare whisky, carefully watching over our maturing casks until the time was right to explore its uniquely indulgent character.”
Further, five other rare whiskies from Glen Elgin, Inchgower, Glenlossie, Cameronbridge and Glenkinchie bring hints of vanilla, heather honey and dried fruits that weave through smooth dark chocolate and nutty layers to create an exploration of this irreplaceable ‘ghost’ whisky, making this limited-edition Johnnie Walker’s most indulgent yet.
