Even with the best intentions, cutting oneself off from the modern-day world and its constant bombardment of information for more than a day or two is nigh-on impossible. A good start is to head somewhere far away, to a place that knows how to give your mind the vacation it deserves, and this is where the Nautilus Maldives’ Mindcation package comes to the forefront.

Switching off from the world is something I advocate for everyone. I do it with a lot of meditation; in just over six months, my computerised EEG system has informed me I have been in an actual meditative state for more than a full week, that’s more than 10,050 minutes.

I realise that doing this isn’t something everyone can do as it requires a specific type of focus and the right equipment and can be inconvenient, so what is the alternative? Well, you can head into a desert or the wilderness and stay in a tent, head up a mountain or away on the seas. However, another solution might be more appealing, and it’s heading to a luxurious resort where the people there know how to disconnect you from technology and reconnect you with nature and, perhaps most importantly, yourself.

The way the modern world operates makes switching off very difficult. Almost every minute of the working day, phones and computer screens will buzz away, interrupting us with all manner of notifications. They expertly grab our focus, prompting us to do something, feeding us propaganda and advertising, and luring us into a mass formation psychosis whilst dangling the incentive of dopamine in front of our faces. It isn’t very nice when you think about it, and all the while this is happening, people are becoming a little more distant from who they really are.

Even when the working day ends, the attention-grabbing continues. According to a study, 62 per cent of people find themselves checking their work emails in bed. The urge to Unplug from digital distractions has become a new luxury in today’s hyper-connected world. Over the past year or so, it has become apparent that travellers are keen to head to places where they can do this.

The Nautilus, one of the most exclusive ultra-luxury private island resorts in the Maldives, has crafted a specific MindCation package aimed at reducing technology-based stress. Guests are encouraged to give up their gadgets in exchange for an off-the-grid experience to reconnect with themselves, nature, and the world at large. And if you want the ultimate break from everything, you can rent out the entire island and have it to yourself!

What to expect upon arrival?
A stay at The Nautilus is a chance to get away from it all in every sense: the magical private island is only accessible by seaplane, a smooth 30-minute flight from Malé to this tranquil corner of the Baa Atoll, where guests will be welcomed by their own private butler (House Master).

As the first step in “your journey back to self,” guests will kindly be advised to place their devices in a wooden lockbox in each house and residence.

Flat-screen TVs will be carefully tucked away and replaced by a speaker or an iPod with relaxing music, as well as a series of mindful meditation podcasts designed by Ananda in the Himalayas.

Treatments and rituals to help unplug
Softly nudging guests towards a more thoughtful way of living, The Nautilus will educate guests on what it means to be human in the simplest of ways and how to find a mind-body balance in a supportive environment.

That philosophy is infused in every part of the day, starting with:

  • Restorative yoga practices.
  • Antar Mauna and Yoga Nidra meditation practices.
  • One-on-one Reiki sessions with one of The Nautilus’ Solasta Spa experts.
  • Healing through Aqua with Tibetan Singing Sound Bath that can be enjoyed in the comfort of one’s private house pool.
  • Moksha Nautilus Signature full body massage that uses traditional Ayurvedic therapeutic techniques.
  • Shirodhara and Abhyanga treatment that combines Ayurvedic therapies to relieve neck and shoulder tension. Research also suggests that Shirodhara may enhance the quality of sleep.
  • Abdominal Detox treatment inspired by Chi Nei Tsang.

The Nautilus also has some great activities to help you forget the modern world’s stresses. These include sailing in a Maldivian Dhoni vessel, reconnecting with nature with diving and snorkelling at Hanifaru Bay, participating in specially designed Art of Bohemia activities or learning the art of traditional, sustainable fishing with locals.
