In this health feature, we look at the Sonic+ Toothbrush and Hydro Sonic Water Flosser from the British brand Ordo, which is on a mission to put smiles back on British faces with its affordable and highly effective oral health products.
The days of people giving their teeth a quick 30-second vigorous scrub in the morning and evening, with a quick rinse with water, are seemingly long gone. Focused dental care is now an essential part of people’s self-care regime, which is why there’s an endless stream of oral health products on the market.
Choosing which products to use is far from easy. No doubt that when people have decided it’s time for a new electric toothbrush, they’ve taken the long walk along a supermarket’s oral health aisle, only to be dazzled by the photoshop-enhanced smiles on the packaging, coupled with words such as “Diamond Clean”, “Ultra-whitening”, “Celebrity smile” and rather pointless tech features such as pairing with phones.
What’s needed is straight-to-the-point, affordable products that do what they are designed to do in simple-to-understand packaging, minus all the glitz and glamour, and that’s what ORDO brings.
Compared to many other companies that specialise in dental care products, ORDO, in my opinion, comes across as ‘saints’. Unlike others whose sole aim is to grab the money and run, Ordo’s ethos is to bring professional care into the home at an affordable price. What I like is that it maintains its fair pricing policy all year round, and it side-steps all opportunities to offer sale promotions to encourage more sales.
Another important point to note about ORDO is it doesn’t fall into the trap of what can only be described as ‘fibbing’. Unlike almost every other dental product manufacturer, ORDO doesn’t claim they can ‘instantly whiten’ teeth; instead, they state they’ll help restore the natural whiteness of one’s teeth.
Why We All Need to Ramp Up Our Oral Healthcare
Many media commentators say Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) is almost at breaking point. I do not doubt that many reading this will have experienced the frustration of not being able to get an appointment at an NHS dentist when needed, and that’s presuming they’ve been fortunate to have been accepted by a clinic in the first place!
The onus is on the individual to keep their mouth healthy; you don’t need to be a rocket scientist to understand how to do it. Every dentist will tell you that regular, effective brushing using the correct technique and flossing are the two essentials for maintaining gum and teeth health.
According to dentaly.org, somewhat shockingly, less than 1/3rd of Brits floss on a regular basis; however, that is kind of understandable, as flossing with tape or string can be time-consuming and challenging for those with insufficient gaps, which leads me nicely onto ORDO’s Hydro Sonic Water Flosser.
The ORDO Hydro Sonic Water Flosser
For much of my adult life, I, too, have avoided flossing as I didn’t understand the benefits, and it took up a lot of time. On the rare occasions, I did do it, I found the tape would often snap, and it subsequently dawned on me that all I was doing was pushing food and ‘nasties further into the recesses of my gums.
I received a water flosser for Christmas a few years ago, and since then, I haven’t looked back. In my opinion, a water flosser is a no-brainer, as it washes away even the hardest-to-reach nasties, is kinder to the gums and takes far less time to do the job compared to flossing with string and tape.
About the Ordo Hydro Sonic Water Flosser
Ordo’s water flosser boasts a smart-looking ergonomic design with a ridged grip and is super-easy to use; just press the on button once it is filled, and away you go!
A great deal of thought has gone into the design of this water flosser. Although it has been created primarily for use in the home, its design makes it easy to transport as it is charged via a USB-C cable and boasts a dedicated travel lock to prevent any mishaps.
Filling it is simple; all you need to do is open the fill cap in its base and position it under the tap. It also comes with two ‘Premium Clean Floss Tips’, from which the water is jetted, and they have different coloured collars, which makes sharing the water flosser with another very simple.
The water flosser is cordless and houses a long-life Lithium Ion battery, which is said to provide more than four weeks of use on a single charge. You also needn’t worry about how much charge is left in the flosser as it has an LED indicator showing the power level and a power-off protection feature to prevent any damage to the battery.
The water tank (the largest in the market) holds up to 260ml of water, which is enough for a 55-second clean (the optimum time recommended by dentists), and it has three pressure modes:
- Sensitive Mode (Low)
- Daily Clean (Medium)
- Power Clean (High)
As with my current water flosser, which admittedly was more than twice the price of this one, the Ordo Hydro Sonic Water Flosser has a smart 2-minute timer and a quad pacer-pulsing every 30 seconds to let you know it is time to move on to the next quadrant in your mouth.
The Ordo water flosser produces up to 2000 water pulsations at up to 130 psi every minute, and the floss tip can be rotated 360 degrees to ensure you can get to even the hardest-to-reach places. What surprised me the most is you get all of this for just £44.99, and on top of that, this water flosser comes with a 60-day guarantee and a two-year warranty.
The Ordo Sonic+ Electric Toothbrush
As with the water flossing technology, I am not unfamiliar with the benefits of using a sonic toothbrush. The Sonic toothbrush I have been using over the past couple of years has an RRP of approximately £300.00, which is frankly ridiculous compared to Ordo’s Sonic+, which is priced at just £49.99. And incredibly, the Ordo Sonic+ has almost the exact same features found on my current Sonic toothbrush:
- Four Brushing Modes
- 40,000 Sonic Pulses
- A Smart two-minute timer
- 4+ weeks of Li-ion battery power (longer than my current model)
- A two-minute timer
- The quad-pacing system
- It is also waterproof, suitable for dental work, and comes with a 60-day guarantee and a 2-year warranty!
Like the ORDO Hydro Sonic Water Flosser, the Sonic+ toothbrush has been designed and approved by dentists. Having tried pretty much every type of electric toothbrush, I have found that with a sonic toothbrush, less vigorous brushing is needed, as the sonic pulses do most of the work.
I drink a lot of tea and often notice dark stains at the tops of my teeth, below the gumline. Ridding myself of these can be a painful and often forlorn process using a typical electric toothbrush. However, I only need to hold the brush head over the area with a Sonic toothbrush and gently use circular motions to remove the offending marks.
It’s a lovely-looking, sleek toothbrush, thanks in no small part to the variety of colours it is available in (see below). One of the most significant plus points with the Ordo Sonic+ is its fantastic battery life of over three weeks; my current Sonic toothbrush, right from day one, barely lasted a week, and today, it needs to be charged every two to three days.
The Sonic+ comes with a travel cap and a slim profile brush head, which is easy to replace. Extra heads are available at £5.00 each, which is fantastic as I am paying upwards of £25.00 for two with my Sonic toothbrush.
In my experience, sonic toothbrushes are the way forward as they benefit both the gums and teeth. Also, I have found them to be far more effective when removing stains and restoring natural teeth whiteness when compared to the other traditional electric toothbrush varieties. If you are looking for an effective, great-value-for-money electric toothbrush, look no further than the Sonic+.
