Mention the number 356 to sports car fans, and they will immediately recognise it relates to the Porsche Speedster. Reservoir watch has a long connection with motoring, and as such, they’ve launched the Kanister timepiece as a celebration of this motoring icon. Being both a watch and car fan, I was eager to find out more.
Reservoir Watch has taken one of the essential parts in a sports car and created a stunning watch design. They are using the Porsche 356 Speedster’s speedometer as a template for their Kanister dial face, making a gorgeous job of it too.
The Porsche 356 Speedster launched in 1949, and production ran through until 1965, when the 911 established itself. The curve panels were different from other post-war vehicles, and it was designed to go fast. People immediately fell in love with the design, and films stars such as James Dean had to own one. Many people still desire a Porsche 356 Speedster and their prices reflect this.
The Kanister features pastel green minute indexes, black dial with white hand housed in a Titanium case. It’s an elegant watch, and the polished finish will no doubt appeal to a wide range of prospective purchasers. The strap is leather, and like bucket seats of the time, the Kanister collection pays tribute to the spirit of freedom that breathed the decade of the 1950s.
As you would expect from a sports watch, it has a screw-down crown and case-back with an open design, so water-resistant to five atmospheres. The case is 41.5 mm in diameter and grade 5 Titanium in a satin finish.
The Kanister is self-winding with a mechanical movement, and this allows a 37-hour power reserve. It also features retrograde minutes, jumping Hour, and Power Reserve with a domed, anti-reflective sapphire crystal cover enveloping the case.
Combining two of my passions, watches and Porsches, the Reservoir Kanister is highly desirable to me. It is not hugely expensive, falling within reach of many collectors, enthusiasts and Porsche lovers.
