If the prospect of a long stretched drawn out winter here in the UK sends shivers down your spine, you may want to pack your passport, sunscreen, flip-flops and a good book and head to Roca Nivaria Gran Hotel, Tenerife, where you’re guaranteed a good dose of sun and complete R&R.
What’s more, the hotel has an inside secret in the shape of a lift which will transport you directly to a small cove overlooking the Atlantic, as Sabi Phagura found out.
This five-star hub, part of the Adrian Hoteles group, is a great getaway if your intentions are to completely switch off from the merry-go-round world most of us live in and do as little as possible. Located in Costa Adeje, it is close to Golf Costa Adeje and Del Duque Beach. So not only are you surrounded by calmness around you but also inside is a 10,000 m2 complex.
Food for the soul is well catered for here and you can eat as much as you like especially if you book all-inclusive. Breakfast and dinner buffets selections are extensive and impressive at the Garoe restaurant. You can easily clock up the steps weaving your way through the food stations just deciding what to have. The menu for dinner changes daily, but you can expect international cuisine from Mexican to Italian, as well as the standard salad, vegetables and dessert bar.
Ahemón is a poolside restaurant where you can enjoy lunch with seriously jaw-dropping views of the sea.
Surrounded by two outdoor pools – one heated saltwater, and the other fresh water pool – you can will away hours sipping cocktails, beer, or munch your way through the freshest salads, fish and meat. I was glad the pool was tempting to jump into, to cool down as I burned off some of those calories I had consumed by sheer default.
But if it’s a sit-down meal you are after, Roca Nivaria offers a choice of two restaurants. Burgos is all about traditional Spanish cuisine, while the Verona restaurant is Italian. But be sure to book a table in advance as I was caught out and was unable to sample Burgos during my stay. However, homemade tuna pizza at the Italian totally made up for it. The crisp glass of Prosecco acted as my palette cleanser as I made room for my tiramisu.
If the guilt of consuming too much food becomes too much, there is plenty of recreational facilities to keep those waistlines at bay. As a health writer, I love a gym, but sometimes find them so cold thanks to the air conditioning, making it feel like walking into a fridge. So you can imagine my delight when I stumbled across the outdoor gym complete with a cross-trainer and bikes overlooking the ocean. It brought a whole new meaning to ‘nature’s gym’. On numerous occasions, I have set the treadmill screen showing to idyllic settings where I visualise myself running. Clearly, there is no use of those screens here.
