Tea is synonymous with Britain, and pretty much every Brit has their go-to favourite blend, with members of the country’s royal family being no exception. For this feature, a tea expert discusses the significance of tea within the royal family and British culture at large.
With years of tradition behind them, the British royal family and tea are practically synonymous. “Each royal has their go-to favourite,” says Arthur Gautier of Nio Teas, a premium brand specialising in high-quality Japanese green teas. “Tea has played a huge role in the royal family ever since Queen Victoria popularised the drink in the 19th century.”
Below, Arthur takes us on a tour of the royal tea cupboard to see what each member is brewing!
Queen Elizabeth II – The Earl of All Things Tea
The late Queen Elizabeth II was all about Earl Grey. Whether it was the soothing citrus of bergamot or the ‘Earl’ in the name (because of royalty!), this classic tea was her morning pick-me-up.
Fun fact: Earl Grey also happens to be served at the legendary Buckingham Palace garden parties. Cheers, Your Majesty!
King Charles III – A Darjeeling Delight
King Charles III takes things up a notch with Darjeeling, known as the ‘champagne of teas.’ Known for his love of nature and sustainability, it’s no wonder Charles prefers this eco-friendly, organic brew.
“I can just imagine him sipping on this floral delight while reflecting on climate change or admiring the gardens at Highgrove,” says Arthur.
Kate Middleton – Earl Grey With A Twist
The Princess of Wales likes her tea with a touch of sweetness—Earl Grey with honey, to be exact!
Whether it’s a nod to Prince William’s charming nature or simply a personal craving, Kate adds just enough honey to make her tea as sweet as her style. Talk about royal elegance in a cup!
Prince William – Keeping It Simple With English Breakfast
You won’t catch Prince William sipping anything too fancy—he’s all about English Breakfast tea. This strong, no-nonsense brew matches his grounded personality.
“I imagine he starts the day with a hearty mug of English Breakfast while prepping for royal duties (or chasing after the kids),” laughs Arthur. It’s the tea of choice for someone who needs energy and focus, and William definitely does!
Prince Harry – Spicing It Up With Ginger Tea
Leave it to rebellious Prince Harry to shake things up with ginger tea! Known for his fiery personality, ginger tea fits Harry’s bold style perfectly. Whether he’s discussing important causes or having a laugh with friends, you can bet he’s doing it with a cup of something spicy and refreshing by his side.
Meghan Markle – Mint To Be
Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, opts for a modern mint tea, bringing a refreshing twist to royal tea time. This herbal infusion, which she sipped on during a visit to Birkenhead, reflects her modern tastes. “It’s caffeine-free, soothing, and perhaps a nod to her health-conscious lifestyle,” says Arthur.
Arthur concludes, “Tea is more than just a drink in the UK; it’s a cultural institution, and the royal family has played a huge part in that. Queen Victoria was the one who popularised afternoon tea in the 1800s, even having her own special blend made just for her. Tea time has been passed down through generations since then, with the royals at the forefront of keeping it alive.
“It’s not just about the tea itself, though—it’s about what it represents. Tea time is about taking a moment, slowing down, and connecting with others. Whether it’s a formal event at Buckingham Palace or a simple tea break at home, it’s a reminder of tradition, heritage, and hospitality.
“You can’t really talk about British life without mentioning tea—and the royals have made sure of that. Teas from royalty-approved brands like Twinings and Fortnum & Mason keep these traditions alive, allowing all of us to enjoy a taste of royalty from the comfort of our own homes.”
