BISSELL is probably the best-known carpet cleaning brand in the world. We took the opportunity to try out their SpotClean Pro, which lets consumers tackle annoying stains via a machine that is half the size of what they would have expected they’d have needed.

2020 has seen an enormous resurgence in cleaning around the house. A couple of years ago, cleaning was considered by many to be nothing more than a chore. However, in these current times, all forms of cleaning are now an essential part of staying healthy. This is one of the reasons why we were eager to get our hands on BISSELL’s revolutionary SpotClean Pro.

Although most reading this will be familiar with vacuuming, far less will have experienced washing and cleaning materials such as carpets, rugs and car seating. At first glance, a carpet or rug might look pristine and clean, but there is a good chance it will be harbouring some particularly nasty things.

The world is currently in the grip of a Coronavirus Pandemic, and if you’re unlucky enough to catch it, the last thing you’d want to do is to add to its effects. Most household carpets contain bacteria, dust mites and other allergens which could cause colds and breathing problems. We all need all to be looking at straightforward ways to minimise any health risks.

We’re not alone in thinking this. 2020 has seen 100’000s of people changing their outdated, worn-out cleaning machines and upgrading them for more efficient models which would in part, explain why the BISSELL factory has been working at maximum capacity during 2020.

Earlier this year, we were afforded the opportunity to test the BISSELL Crosswave Cordless Multi-Surface Cleaner, which is a dedicated full-sized carpet cleaner; we were mightily impressed, you can read our thoughts and findings here.

First and foremost, the SpotClean Pro isn’t designed to do what the Crosswave Cordless does. This smaller model is specifically designed to target small areas which for many will be far more useful.

What does the BISSELL SpotClean Pro do?
The SpotClean Pro is a far smaller machine than other cleaners in its sector. The machine has been designed to remove, clean and dry everyday dirt from carpets, soft furnishings, rugs and for our test, car seats; and all within a short period of time.

Due to its small size, the SpotClean Pro only weighs 5.9kgs, which makes it relatively easy to move to where it is needed via the large handle at the top of the machine. It also doesn’t take up much space in the understairs cupboard, which will be an added bonus for many. While we’re on this subject of transportability, one aspect we should mention is the machine doesn’t have wheels. For us, this wasn’t a problem as we felt it increased its stability and this was very evident when we sat it on the staircase of our home.

The BISSELL SpotClean Pro is capable of tackling a wide variety of stains thanks to it having a selection of brush heads. For example, it comes with an 8cm head which is designed for small spills while the 15cm one is suitable for cleaning larger areas. The machine has an extra-long power cord and a 1.5m hose which makes tasks such as tackling car upholstery simple.

The powerful 750W motor inside the machine does make a lot of noise. It is not noisy to the point where it becomes a hindrance of annoyance, more so, you certainly knew it was on when cleaning!

Testing the SpotClean Pro
BISSELL states the machine is ideal for both brand new spills and older ingrained stains, and although we like testing things thoroughly, we didn’t have the courage to pour a fresh-coloured liquid onto our pristine carpets. Instead, we opted to tackle an old stain caused by a spilt soft drink on the driver’s seat in our car. The SportClean Pro comes with a decent-length 6.5m power cord, but we needed to use an extension lead due to the positioning of the power points in our garage.

At the front of the SpotClean Pro is a clear tank which we filled with tap water and the detergent mix. We sprayed this onto the stain and then set about agitating it with the brush head in a circular motion. Once we were satisfied we’d scrubbed enough; we simple vacuumed up the dirty water. It was a simple as that!

Although the stain, at first glance, looked to have gone, we decided to give it some time before making any final judgement. The following day we took another look and couldn’t see any indication of something being there previously. The annoying mark on the car seat that had been with us for probably a year or more had completely vanished.

The chances are that many reading this will not have the need to remove a stain from some carpet or fabric as you’re not as careless as we are. But if you do experience an unfortunate accident and need something to deal with it, the SpotClean Pro is the ideal machine to have in your home arsenal. It’s pitched at a price that won’t break the bank; it’s also small enough so that it won’t be obtrusive. As we say in the Godbold household, “if you can, always be prepared!”

How to purchase it
The BISSELL SpotClean Pro is currently priced at a relatively modest £149.99, and thus far the feedback on the brand’s official website has been extremely positive with it garnering 4.9 stars out of a maximum five. If you’re keen to get one, you’ll be pleased to know it comes with a three-year warranty and is available for purchase via major electrical retailers or the brand’s official website bisselldirect.co.uk.
