Mercedes-Benz have introduced the new S65 AMG a luxury high-performance coupe following on from the successful introduction of the SL 65 AMG and the S65 AMG.
AMG or if we give the official name, Mercedes-AMG GmbH is the official tuning arm of Mercedes-Benz. The AMG models are all characterised by more aggressive styling, vastly superior performance and better stability and handling and this is exactly what you get with the new S65 AMG. The new model is powered by the AMG tuned 6.0 Litre V12 biturbo engine which produces a mammoth 621 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.
This extra power results in stunning performance with the S65 AMG Coupe travelling from 0-60 mph in just 4.0 seconds and topping out at 186 mph (electronically limited). Although we haven’t driven this super-car, Mercedes-Benz state that with all the power under the hood, it still offers an assured sensational drive, coupled with tremendous pulling power, effortless power delivery in all speed ranges, refined engine running characteristics, and as an added bonus you still get the distinctive rorty rumble of the AMG V12.
One of the mechanisms responsible for getting all this power from the car to the road is the AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-Tronic. The transmission offers three driving modes, Controlled Efficiency (C), Sport (S) and Manual (M) by pushing a button on the center console. Sport and Manual offer a much greater emphasis the vehicle’s dynamic aspects with shortened shift times and a wonderful sounding tone when shifting gears.
The AMG badge will denote to many the power that the car houses, but another aspect equally as important to many is the exterior looks of the car. When we look at the new S65 AMG Coupe we are slightly conflicted, to us, the styling has started to look a little bland. Now this is just our opinion and people around the world may disagree but we would have liked to have seen this new car with an even more aggressive look from the outside. From a three-quarter view, the car looks superb, but it’s the side view that spoils it for us, it looks like someone with a torso slightly too long for their body. If it was us in the styling department, we’d have placed some more aggressive wheel arches and created more of a wide-body car.
The forged wheels looks good, and remind us of the best looking Alpina alloys that were found on their top-of-the-range tuned BMWs. The alloy rims have 16 spokes that give the impression of being larger than they actually are and offer a clever play on light when in motion.
Although we were a little underwhelmed with some of the exterior styling, we have absolutely no problem with the interior. As expected, the inside of the S65 AMG Coupe is a luxurious world made from a cacophony of exquisite materials. Inside the interior is dominated by the sports seats. The upholstery in designo AMG Exclusive Nappa leather with seat upholstery layout in a diamond-pattern design boasts delineated perforations which ensure beautiful harmony between perforations and stylistic stitching. The result is exceptionally neat seams and an unrivalled impression of quality.
Exclusively developed AMG sports seats ensure optimal long-distance comfort. Electric adjustment, memory function, seat heating and climate control are standard features. More contoured seat cushions and backrests improve lateral support when cornering at speed. High-quality AMG badges are prominently displayed on all four backrests, and the AMG crest is embossed on the front centre console.
Other features of the exclusive package include the Nappa leather roof liner, a leather-lined dashboard, door center panels in a diamond-pattern design, leather-clad roof grab handles, chromed door pins and AMG stainless steel door sill panels illuminated in white. Customers ordering designo AMG Exclusive Nappa leather upholstery are able to choose between black, porcelain/espresso brown, saddle brown/black and crystal grey/black.
